On the 23 of August, the Newlands Intermediate Mathletes achieved a 3rd placing in the yearly MathsWell Competition. MathsWell is a competition for school aged students from years 5 to 11 which champions mathematicians across Wellington. Organised by the Wellington Mathematics Association and sponsored by The Ministry of Education and Casio, MathsWell is not your everyday maths competition. Its strict rules, time factor and advanced questions make for a nail-biting, suspense-filled competition. This year 12 students at Newlands Intermediate, coached by Lilly Zhang from Newlands College, battled it out for a place in the top 7.

With 8 people remaining, Ms Zhang had to make the decision of who was in the team.

“It was really hard to decide who to keep, and who to let go. They were all fantastic, hard working, intelligent, and analytical students.”

In collaboration with principal, Angela Lowe and Ms Zhang made the difficult decision of choosing the team. Multiple Choice: Karthik Konakanchi, Abigail Steel, Esther Leo. Problem Solving: Jayden Kah, Chinmay Madhusudhan, Ella Pan, Matthew Sim (Reserve).

On the night, the structure of the competition had changed drastically from the way we had trained. Both teams had to quickly adapt to this new format. In round 1, the problem solving team scored a total of 6 out of 13. This may not sound like a good start but because the questions were so challenging, we still scored in the top 10. Second up, the multi choice teamed scored a whopping 12 out of 15, helping Newlands to progress into round 2, where the top 10 schools compete for the 2017 MathsWell cup. The teams from 11 to 30, battled for the 2017 MathsWell plate.

After a tense, exhausting 2nd round, we waited anxiously for the results. Never in a million years would we have guessed that we would have gained 3rd place. We are very thankful to our 4 time MathsWell winner, Lilly Zhang, who coached our practices and boosted our morale on the night. Without her help, we would not have been able to face the questions logically or confidently. We have trained hard this year and are very pleased with our result. We wish the best of luck to next year’s teams.
